The ultimate birthday unicorn cakes

Who doesn’t love unicorn cakes? There’s something seriously pretty about them and girly. They’re also seriously popular with the under 10s currently!
Unicorn cakes are also pretty versatile too – want a pink mane? No problem. Prefer rainbow instead? Knock yourself out.
We haven’t done any boy unicorn cakes yet, but hey, there’s always a first time and doing something fun and funky with blues and oranges would be really cool too.
Must-haves on unicorn cakes
- Got to have a gold horn – we make all our unicorn horns out of fondant which we then paint with edible gold. Chances are you’ll see some brighter, more goldy horns on the likes of Pinterest but they’re normally painted with non-edible gold paint which means you can’t eat them and quite frankly, where’s the fun in that?!
- Cute ears – Where would a unicorn cake be without the two cute ears poking up? Again, painted in edible gold they are there to be admired then eaten.
- Buttercream mane – Where would unicorn cakes be without buttercream manes?! These are swirls of buttercream, usually vanilla but we can flavour them differently, in various shades of pastel. Rainbow is pretty popular right now where we mix the icing colours together to create rainbow swirls. Technically a little more challenging than piping a simple swirl but still super cool to look at.
- Cute eyelashes – We normally model these out of black fondant though you can pipe them on with royal icing or paint them on with a bit of edible black paint too. The more eyelashes the better though it’s fine line between cute and drag queen!
Anyway, we’ve rounded up our collection of unicorn cakes to give you a quick retrospective on what we’ve done over the last year.
And without further ado here they are…!
